How to Choose a Whale Shark

Every whale shark operator in La Paz says "small group" and "certified guide." What most of them don't say is that every boat in the bay plays by exactly the same rules — the same minutes with each shark and the same number of people allowed in the water. Once you know that, choosing a tour comes down to one question: how many people are you sharing those minutes with?

Every Boat Gets the Same Time and the Same Five Swimmers

Swimming with whale sharks in La Paz Bay is governed by SEMARNAT's 2026–2029 management plan, and it applies the same way to every permitted boat:

• One boat per shark, 30 minutes maximum. Only one boat may stay with a shark or group of sharks, for up to 30 minutes, so no single animal is over-stressed. Then the boat moves on to find another shark, while everyone else waits 50 meters away.
• Five swimmers in the water, with a guide. No more than five guests may be in the water at once, no matter how many are on board.
• Same shifts, same zone. CONANP assigns every boat its departure shift and limits swimming to the same stretch of water off El Mogote.

A bigger boat doesn't get a longer encounter or a bigger group in the water. It just has more people waiting for their turn.

The Math: 10 Guests vs. 24 Guests

The 30 minutes is per shark, not per trip. When it's up, the boat moves on and searches for the next one. Our departures have 2 hours in the zone, and we almost always find another shark, and another. So take one 30-minute encounter and fill every entry with the legal maximum of five swimmers:

Then repeat it for every shark you find during the 2 hours. Three sharks means three encounters on either boat, and the smaller group gets about 2.4 times the water time on each one. Real swims include entries, exits and repositioning, so the exact minutes vary — but the share each guest gets doesn't.

The Value: More Than Double for a Little More

Small-group tours usually cost somewhat more per person, so measure the price against the time you actually spend with the sharks. Our small-group whale shark tour is $2,800 MXN with a maximum of 10 guests. For a 24-guest tour to give you the same water time per peso, it would need to cost less than about $1,170 MXN per person (2,800 ÷ 2.4). Pay a little more, and you get more than twice the time in the water.

One Guide, Fewer People

The rules allow one guide to supervise up to five swimmers at a time, so on a big boat the guide has to cycle group after group through the water within the same 30 minutes. On a 10-guest boat, the guide is working with two groups instead of five. That means:

• time to fit your mask and fins properly, and to talk you through the entry before you're in the water;
• a guide who can watch every swimmer, place your group at the right angle to the shark and tell you what it's doing;
• room for questions about the shark, the bay and the rules — not a headcount and a whistle.

Room to Move

Whale shark boats in La Paz Bay can be no longer than 11 meters (36 feet). Put 24 guests plus crew on that deck, and everyone is gearing up, climbing in and out of the water and dripping in the same small space, for every rotation. With 10 guests there is room to sit down, change, store your bag and get to the ladder without a queue. On a 3–4 hour trip, that matters.

Better for the Sharks, Too

Every time a group enters or leaves the water, it is a disturbance the plan specifically tries to keep calm: entries must be quiet, with no jumping or splashing, and the encounter must end if a shark shows signs of stress. A 10-guest boat puts swimmers in and out about twice per encounter; a 24-guest boat does it about five times in the same 30 minutes. Fewer entries means a calmer encounter for the shark and, usually, a longer, more natural swim for you.
