La Paz Itinerary
2 to 7 Days

La Paz doesn't need a week to be worth the trip — but it rewards one if you have it. This is built the way we'd plan it for a friend: a solid two days that work completely on their own, then exactly what to add if you've got more time. Skip to whichever tier matches your trip.

Start With Two Days

This is the minimum that still feels complete: one marine tour, one real dinner, sunset on the Malecón. Everything past this point is what to add if you have more time — the core stands on its own.

Day 1 — Arrival & the Malecón

Check in, then walk the Malecón as the light goes gold — this is orientation, not a tour stop. Dinner at El Paceñito or Mariscos El Toro Güero for mariscos, or Tacos de Carnitas Don Abraham if you want something faster and just as good. Day 2 — The Reason You Came

Morning: the Whale Shark tour in season, or Isla Espíritu Santo / Sea Safari Norte outside it. Afternoon: rest, then the short hike up Cerro de la Calavera near the Malecón — best timed for sunset. Dinner: NEMI, Michelin Guide Mexico 2026-recommended, for the one splurge night of a short trip.

Have 3 Days? Add Balandra

Balandra is repeatedly named one of Mexico's most beautiful beaches — the El Hongo rock formation, shallow turquoise water. Two ways to get there:

• By boat — The Hook's own Balandra tour, or the Grand Slam combo if you'd rather fold this into Day 2's water time: whale sharks, sea lions, and Balandra in one 5-hour trip, season permitting.
• DIY — Balandra requires an advance CONANP reservation and early arrival for the limited parking if you're driving or taking a taxi or DiDi yourself.

Round out the day with sandboarding at El Mogote if there's daylight left, or the Mercado Orgánico y Artesanal if it's a Tuesday or Saturday.

Have 5 Days? Add a DIY Beach Day and Museums

Not every beach day needs to be a tour. Playa El Tecolote and Playa Ensenada Grande are both reachable via the local beach bus running the La Paz–Pichilingue route from the Malecón bus station — it's inexpensive and runs multiple times a day, though like most things on Baja time it's worth confirming that day's schedule at the station rather than planning around a fixed time. La Concha and Lupita at El Tecolote are our own picks for food and drinks right on the sand.

Getting around for this tier: DiDi works well in La Paz and is generally the locals' preferred option over Uber — cheaper and easy to order through the app. One quirk worth knowing: from the airport, DiDi and Uber aren't allowed to pick up right at the terminal, so you'll walk out to the highway to catch one.

Have a Full Week? Add El Triunfo and More Water Time

El Triunfo is a small mountain town about 45 minutes from La Paz with real Baja Sur history — museums, authentic food, cobblestone streets, bike rentals, and old mine tours. It's also a great option on a windy day when the water's not cooperating. With a full week, this is the day trip that earns its place over a repeat beach day.

For the water: a second marine tour is worth it at this point rather than padding with generic activities — Sea Safari Norte if you did Whale Shark and Isla Espíritu Santo already, or vice versa. If you'd rather slow down, ask us about kayak, paddleboard, or snorkel gear rental for a self-guided day on the water.
