For years the only way to see Balandra with The Hook was to charter the whole boat. That's perfect for a family or a group of friends — and a lot of boat for a couple or a solo traveler. So Balandra now runs as a shared tour too: $1,925 MXN per person with the park bracelet, on our small-group boat, with no more than 10 guests aboard.
Same Beach, Same Route — Shared
The shared tour follows the same day as our private charter. You arrive at Balandra by water instead of the highway and the parking lot, with hours on the sand instead of a quick look from the overlook. The difference is simply who's on the boat: you, plus a few other travelers who came for the same thing.
Our boats hold 12, but we cap shared trips at 10 so there's room to move, snorkel and relax — a small group, not a crowded day boat.
How the Day Runs
Meet at The Hook on the Malecón, 30 minutes before departure, then walk with your guide to Muelle Fiscal to board. On the way north you pass Isla Gaviotas, watching for Blue-footed Boobies diving offshore, and stop to snorkel with the Sea Lion colony at San Rafaelito (in season — other snorkel spots in the bay outside it).
Then Playa Balandra — about two hours in the sand. We time the arrival for the gap between Balandra's morning and afternoon entry cycles, so the beach is at its quietest. Swim in the turquoise shallows, walk out to El Hongo, and sit down to fresh ceviche, fruit and snacks on the beach. On the way back to La Paz, keep watching for dolphins — and whales in season.
