Most people in Southern California have heard of La Paz the way they've heard of a restaurant they keep meaning to try. They know it exists. They know people who've been. They haven't gone. This is the piece that changes that — because Alaska Airlines now flies direct from LAX to La Paz in about two and a half hours, and if you're in San Diego, the CBX route gets you there in under four hours door to gate either way. What's waiting on the other end is genuinely better than most people expect.

From LA or Orange County: Fly Direct, No Detour Through Cabo

This is the one most people don't know yet: Alaska Airlines flies nonstop from LAX straight to La Paz — not Los Cabos, not a connection, La Paz itself. The flight is about 2 hours 33 minutes, running several times a week, with round-trip fares that have run as low as $132–303 USD. You land at La Paz International Airport, 15 minutes from the Malecón, with zero border crossing and zero five-hour bus ride tacked onto a Cabo vacation.

For years the only way to reach La Paz from LA or Orange County meant flying into Los Cabos and enduring a long shuttle ride north, or making the CBX/Tijuana crossing work despite the longer drive from LA. That's no longer the case. If you're flying out of LAX, book the direct Alaska flight — it's simpler, it's often cheaper than a Cabo package with a shuttle added on, and it puts you on the water the same afternoon you land.

From San Diego: CBX Still Gets You There in Under 4 Hours

If you're starting from San Diego, the direct Alaska flight is a longer drive north to LAX than it's worth — the CBX route below is usually the better call. CBX Cross Border Xpress in Otay Mesa connects San Diego directly to Tijuana Airport via a 390-foot pedestrian bridge. You park on the San Diego side, walk across, clear Mexican immigration, and you're in the terminal. The whole process takes 15–30 minutes. CBX costs $20–27 USD one way and runs 24 hours a day.

From Tijuana Airport, Volaris flies direct to La Paz. The flight is one hour and twenty minutes, priced as a domestic Mexican route — round trips typically run $80–150 USD.

Add it up: drive or rideshare to CBX in Otay Mesa (30–45 minutes from most of San Diego), cross the bridge, fly to La Paz. You're on the Malecón in La Paz in under four hours from your front door.

The short version: LA and Orange County — book the direct Alaska Airlines flight from LAX. San Diego — CBX and Volaris is still the fastest, cheapest way north.

What La Paz Actually Is

La Paz is the capital city of Baja California Sur. It has 250,000 people, a real downtown, a waterfront Malecón that functions the way a main street should — restaurants, coffee shops, palapa bars, fish taco stands, people walking and cycling in the evening. It has none of the resort-strip energy of Los Cabos. No one is trying to sell you a timeshare. The pace is completely different.

What La Paz has that nowhere else in Baja has: the Sea of Cortez marine ecosystem right at its door. Jacques Cousteau called this stretch of water the world's aquarium, and the concentration of marine life in and around La Paz Bay is not a marketing phrase — it's measurable biodiversity. Whale Sharks aggregate here from November through April. Sea Lions by the thousand live 45 minutes away at Isla Espíritu Santo. Mobula rays gather in schools that you have to see to believe. Orcas pass through the Canal de Cerralvo. Gray whales give birth three hours away on the Pacific coast.

None of this requires a tour from Los Cabos. None of it requires a 5-hour bus ride. It requires flying to La Paz.

The 48-Hour La Paz Trip — What It Actually Looks Like

This is the trip most Southern California people end up doing the first time — two nights, which turns into a recurring habit.

Thursday evening: Cross CBX, fly to La Paz, arrive by 9pm. Check into a hotel near the Malecón. Walk five minutes to dinner — ceviche, fish tacos, cold beer. The Malecón at night is one of the genuinely pleasant things about this city.

Friday morning: WhatsApp The Hook the night before and confirm your tour for the next day. Choose what you want — Sea Safari Norte departs at 7:30am and runs eight hours on the open water looking for whatever the Sea of Cortez is producing. Isla Espíritu Santo is a full six-hour day with 1,000+ Sea Lions. Balandra Beach by private boat is the option if you want the most beautiful water you've ever sat in. If it's November through April, swimming with Whale Sharks is the reason most people come the first time.

Friday afternoon: Back to the Malecón. The fish taco situation in La Paz is serious. There are at least four places within walking distance of the waterfront that would be considered destination restaurants anywhere in Southern California. They are not charging destination prices.

Saturday: Second tour, or the Malecón, or a drive to El Triunfo for the coffee and the silver mining history. Fly home that afternoon. You're back in San Diego by evening.

What's Available Year-Round

Whale Sharks are November through April. Everything else runs year-round — and summer is when the Sea of Cortez produces some of its most spectacular wildlife. Mobula rays peak March through July. The Sea Lion colony at Isla Espíritu Santo is active September through May. Balandra Beach is magnificent any time of year. The fishing is exceptional twelve months a calendar.

There is no bad time to go to La Paz. There are different things happening at different times, and The Hook runs tours every day the sea allows regardless of season.

A Few Things Worth Knowing

Stays longer than seven days in Mexico require completing an FMM immigration form and paying a tourist tax — currently $488 MXN for international visitors. For a weekend trip this doesn't apply. For longer stays, the form is available online at the Mexican immigration website and takes about five minutes.

CBX requires a boarding pass for a flight at Tijuana Airport departing within 24 hours. You cannot use it as a general border crossing without a ticket. Book your Volaris flight first, then the CBX crossing opens up for purchase on the same transaction.

La Paz is on Mountain Time. San Diego is on Pacific Time. The difference is one hour — minimal jet lag, easy adjustment.
