Every May and June, tens of thousands of mobula rays gather off La Ventana, widely called the largest gathering of rays in the world. This is a full day built around finding them: pickup in La Paz before sunrise in our licensed van (or in La Ventana if you're staying there), breakfast on the drive, and a boat of 8 guests at most launching from Ensenada de Muertos.

We look for Munk's devil rays, small cousins of the giant manta, about one meter (3 ft) across, dark on top and white underneath. They're harmless: no stinger, and they eat only plankton. A school is called a "fever," and from the boat the water can look like it's boiling. They leap clear of the water and land with a slap you can hear across the bay. Nobody knows for sure why. Underwater they're shy and sensitive to bubbles, so we snorkel or freedive quietly beside them.

Some days we swim with literally thousands of them. Never guaranteed, wildlife is wild, but the mobulas are why we go out, and we spend the day looking for them.

The day is spent finding the big mobula aggregations and getting in the water with them, snorkeling or freediving. As we search, we might also come across the other wildlife of our sea safaris: whales, dolphins, sea lions, giant mantas and, on lucky days, orcas. Mobulas are high on the orcas' menu, so where the rays gather, orcas sometimes follow.

Your guide shoots photos and video in the water, so you can stay in the moment. We send them to you after the trip by email, WhatsApp or a video sharing link.
